What Kind of Windshield Do I Have?

This permanent bug on your windshield is probably a bit different than what you have pictured. The automotive glass industry actually refers to the stamp pictured above as a “bug” or “monogram” which can usually be found on the bottom corner of your windshield. The bug provides pertinent information about the windshield, which can be helpful to both consumers and glass shops for looking up the windshield part number.

Why Is It There?

If you’re going to have your windshield replaced soon, it may be beneficial to provide the glass shop with the information in the bug. Or if you recently had your glass replaced, you may want to confirm that the shop used quality glass. So what do all of these numbers and symbols mean?

What Does It Mean?

We’ll start with the most obvious—this glass is for a Nissan and is most likely the original factory part since it displays the company logo. The company that made the part for Nissan is Vitro and it was manufactured in Mexico. Not all glass will have these logos displayed, but all will list the Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) number that the company is registered under. For example, Vitro is registered under DOT 287.

What about the line reading “LAMINATED AS1”? U.S. federal regulations require that glass pass certain safety tests. AS1 glass passes them all, AS2 does not pass all the impact tests, and AS3 is typically of a darker tint and is referred to as privacy glass. Since AS1 is the only glass to pass all safety tests, it is the only glass allowed for windshield use.

The E with a circle around it may be displayed if the product is also distributed in Europe. You may also see “CCC” with a circle around it if the product is distributed in China. Both of these markings carry similar meanings to the US’s AS1 safety rating. The long number next to the E which reads “43R-000499” also pertains to European distribution. The first section, “43R”, indicates the part conforms to the European standard of safety regulation number 43. The set of numbers that follows, “000499”, is the approval number assigned to the part.

Next, we’ll look at M119. This is the manufacturer’s part number which allows them to identify the glass. There may be additional symbols, illustrations, or codes added by the manufacturer to indicate information such as date of manufacture, added options, and more.

Replacing the Glass

When having your glass replaced, these manufacturer designations may help the glass company identify the exact glass needed for your vehicle. But because some vehicles can have up to 20 different windshields depending on equipment options, they may need the vehicle identification number, or even to do a visual inspection to identify a match.

Get an Estimate

I have a windshield in my garage and I don’t know what vehicle it’s for. How do I figure out what vehicle the windshield goes in?

This is a question we commonly receive at Glass.com. Unfortunately, identifying what vehicle a loose windshield fits is not as straightforward as one might guess. The issue is that the bug does not contain information that identifies the year, make, and model of the vehicle the glass fits. This is likely because certain windshields can fit multiple vehicle years, makes, and models. Succinctly listing all the compatible vehicles would be nearly impossible for the manufacturer. Manufacturers also don’t always know ahead of time exactly how many years a certain vehicle may be manufactured. The bug is simply meant to indicate the facts listed earlier in this blog; mainly stating the name of the manufacturer, that it complies with certain safety standards, and basic information regarding the actual manufacturing of the part.

Without any other information printed on the windshield, the only way to accurately know what vehicle a windshield is meant for would be to have a copy of the original purchase order. Unfortunately, these typically get lost over the years and won’t accompany the windshield. Other times, they become destroyed over time from moving the windshield around, rodents, and weather.

Some clues, however, may help you narrow down your search. First, the car make is commonly listed within the bug’s information. For this reason, you’ll at least know what vehicle make the windshield matches with. Next, look at the manufacturing date which may coincide closely with the vehicle’s year. Hopefully this will help you limit it to a certain range of years, in which only certain models were present. Finally, some glass techs who have been replacing windshields for a long time can use the measurements to help identify which vehicle it might fit. However, just because the measurements are the same does not mean it’s an exact match. This method is not foolproof and your local auto glass company will likely recommend that you order a new windshield to ensure an exact fit.

Installing the proper windshield for your vehicle, old or new, is important for many reasons. A proper fit helps to ensure that the windshield is properly bonded to its frame. The windshield is an integral part of a vehicle’s safety system in the event of an accident, so it is paramount that the windshield stays in place upon impact. Additionally, a proper fit will ensure that leaks such as air leaks and water leaks do not occur. These leaks can be annoying at best and detrimental to your vehicle at worst. Lastly, installing the correct windshield ensures that you retain all the same features that your vehicle came equipped with from the factory. For example, if your vehicle features rain-sensing windshield wipers, but you replace the windshield with the wrong part, your car may not be able to perform this feature any longer.

  1. I Am trying to Identify this rear heated window. The following information was on the window bug.

    E-Z-Eye
    Safety Float
    AS-2
    Solid Tempered Heated
    I Y
    Dot 15 M50

The only number written on the box was #7161. It is in the original Libby- Owens- Ford box. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Blaise

    1. Hi Blaise,
Unfortunately, a windshield’s bug is usually only helpful in identifying the make-up of the glass itself, and not what vehicles the glass can be used in. It is only if the manufacturer purchases a NAGS license in order to list the NAGS part number is it possible to later on discern exactly what vehicle(s) the glass fits. The number on the box is of little help unless possibly you are able to get in touch with the company that distributed the product in the first place. Sorry there wasn’t an easy answer.

    2. Closest I can get is that the date code on the glass (IY) indicates it was manufactured in June of 1972, and its for a GM vehicle. A lot of the GM vehicles used the same glass across the car makes (ie Chevy, Buick, Olds etc). IF you can “estimate” what the measurements of what the glass would be IF it were flat, you might be able to determine what it fits by visiting an auto glass company that has been around for awhile and would still have a copy of the NAGS auto glass specs book for 1972. After that its just a process of elimination. (Fits a 1972 GM model car, and has a measurement of X” by X”. Hope this helps!

  2. I need to know what this windshield fits please. I know its a small sports car but which one it fits is my question. Here are the markings

Viracon Tinted ASI M 50 DOT 129 bottom right corner
    234 B2 opposite side corner

    15 0 top right corner.

Hope you can get me some direction here. Thanks!

    1. Ralph, unfortunately is it extremely difficult to identify a windshield part based solely on its markings- these are typically used by the manufacturer to identify the material make-up of the part. I would suggest contacting the manufacturer or bringing it to an experienced local windshield replacement technician.

    1. Hi Ruby, We do not recommend removing this as it is an identifying part of the windshield. Attempting to remove it could also be difficult and risk damage to the windshield.

    1. Hi Gerald, AS3 glass is considered by ANSI Z26.1 standards to be a lower grade than AS2 mainly due to the fact that this glass allows for less visibility due to the darker color. AS2 and AS3 are both more susceptible to breakage than AS1 (they do not pass the stell ball drop test and therefore cannot be used for windshields). AS3 glass may appear to scratch more easily due to the darker color which would show scratches more easily.

  3. Hello I was given three windshields of different sizes and shapes I was wanting to know if I could find out or how to find out what kind of car they can be fit in And how to identify the year and what make of car or truck they might fit in

    1. Hi Jerry,

Unfortunately this is a tougher task than one would think. If you’re lucky, the windshield manufacturer will have a National Auto Glass Specifications (NAGS) license and the part number will be printed on the glass. In this case you can contact NAGS to find out what vehicles it fits. This is probably not the case though. If you contact the manufacturer of the windshield, they should be able to tell you more about the glass itself (thickness, chemical makeup, etc.) but it is not likely they will be able to tell you what vehicles it fits.
Your last option is to bring the windshields to a local auto glass shop. Some industry veterans may be able to identify what vehicle a windshield fits, but this is not a foolproof method.

  4. I want to create a custom logo in the same typefaces as used in these windshield bugs as well as have it heat applied to a glass surface in the same manner. It isn’t for a car, just a personal project.

Is there software used to create these bugs and who might offer the ability to print and apply the enamel logo to glass?

    Thanks

    1. Hi Jonathan,

The best resource for this would be the windshield manufacturers themselves.

      Thanks for the question!

    1. Hi Lalaine,

To clarify- by “glazing code” are you referring to the number that identifies the manufacturer? Or the part number that identifies the glass?

  5. Hello! I was trying to fully identify this sticker to figure out what tint % is on my windows. It has 0 27 rather than 0 • like the example. Would that mean the windows are rated 27%?

    1. Hi Cole,

There are a number of…numbers…stamped a vehicle’s glass and most codes are unique to the manufacturer so it would be difficult to say exactly what the 27 you’re referring to means. Getting in touch directly with the manufacturer may help.

  6. My side windows read
    VW
    Sekurit
    43R 004585
    Dot615 v35 as2
    …..0
    Tinted
How do I tell if it is uva protection? It’s a 2000 beetle. I have a sun allergy and am trying to protect myself. Thanks so much.

    1. Great question Laragene! The majority of coupes and sedans don’t have any tint at all. For those that do, its main purpose is to add a degree of privacy rather than UV protection. The best option for those with sun allergies and sensitivities is to have aftermarket window film applied by a local and reputable tint shop. They should be able to explain the benefits that different types of tint provide, and recommend an option to suit your needs.

  7. How can you tell the tinyt color? My rear window is shattered, and I would like to order a replacement. The vehicle is a 2015 Honda CRV

    1. Hi Lou,

Your best option will be to work with a qualified glass shop who will be able to order the proper glass for your vehicle and handle the replacement.

  8. I’ve been looking everywhere to find some information about how to register for a DOT number as a windshield manufacturer.

Can someone help me please ? Thanks in advance.

  12. Hello~ I was wondering if you could tell if there is any significant difference between these two windshields. This first one is the one that was just installed on my 2016 Chev Silverado 2500:
    Laminated GS, DOT-287, AS-1, M180, TRANS 70% Min. E3
    VITRO 43R-000495, OCP N 0009, 18 . . . . . . (with . . . underneath)

However, it looks less tinted than the following windshield that was originally on the truck, but unfortunately had to be replaced due to rock damage:
    GM
    Laminated GS, DOT 1038, AS-1, M154, TRANS 70% Min. E2
    43R -0115124
    E001 488
    Thank you so much!

    1. Hi Kit,

Thanks for the question! The second windshield you listed is made by a well-known company called Fuyao. We can tell this because each manufacturer is assigned a DOT number (1038 in this case). There will almost always be differences from manufacturer simply due to differences in production processes from brand to brand.

  13. Hi, I would appreciate if you can explain the meaning of “OCP N 0009” figure marked on the windscreen. I searched about this on the internet but could not find a clear answer. Thanks a lot!

  14. My glass search started because i am trying to find what factory tint % number my windows are. This is the glass code off of my 07 Chevy Avalanche: GM TEMPERED GS DOT 615 M40V AS2 TRANS 70% MIN SAINT-GOBAIN SEKURIT E9 43R-004529 6. I still haven’t found any information on or what % they are tinted but am coming to the conclusion the only way to find out is to go somewhere that has a tint meter and have them measure my glass.

  15. I had my windshield replaced due to a chip. Now I have a hard time seeing while driving as it seems to fog up and at strange times. Is it possible they replaced it with an incorrect style?
    I drive a 2016 fusion titanium awd.

    1. Hi Melissa,

Thanks for the question! Normally condensation is due to climate conditions and it could just be a coincidence that weather changes coincided with the time of your windshield replacement. If your windshield is fogging from the inside, this is due to moisture. Be sure your car’s ventilation system is working properly and use the defrost setting with the A/C on (even if your heat is on)- this will help take moisture out of the air. Let us know if this helps!

  16. Hello, I am trying to find out if there is a NAGS part number for a Guardian windshield that fits in a old workhorse truck. The truck is used by a uniform company similar to a Cintas truck. Though it is not a DW 1648/49/50 or DW1676. The Guardian bug has a MM N 12 14B. I am thinking its because it maybe a R.V. chassis. Any help would be great.

    Thx,
    Jim

    1. Hi James,

The easiest way to find a replacement windshield for this vehicle will be to contact an auto glass replacement company and they will be able to locate the proper NAGS number based on the year make and model.

      Thanks!

  17. Can 2 windshields in the same car belong to two different years like in new Mercedes
GLC which I had bought in 2017, all glasses were of 2016 but the back windshield was of 2017
    Is this ethical or possible
+ The car is manufactured on 05/17 but the back windshield has 6 dots followed by 17 something like ……17(dots are on the upper side)
    Please explain

  18. How could you possibly miss the most important number that everyone cares about??? What about that gigantic and long number that’s stamp
    43R-000499????

You don’t even mention what that means!

    1. Louis, you make a great point that we left out this detail! We actually did so because, like the number “E9” next to it, it also pertains to European market information. Most of our readership is within the US, but it’s important none the less!

  19. I have a Ford Kuga Titanium X Sport April 2015 reg and due to a crack the windscreen has just been replaced.
However the new screen sits approximately 5mm lower than the original thus leaving a larger gap at the top of the screen than before.
    The bug contains the following:
    Ford CV44-503100E LAMINATED PILKINGTON E1. DOT682-001585
    E000231.
My sister has the same model car and her screen is original , her numbers match
mine except for the first line which reads CV44-503100F.
Would this be sufficient for my replacement screen to be incorrect ?9

    1. Hi David,

Is there a rubber gasket that runs around the windshield? If not, it’s possible that the installer forgot to install this rubber molding. This will cause it to appear as if there is a gap.

  20. I have a 08 Mini S, had original glass and had it replaced, they promised my new glass OEE would have the same tint as the glass being removed, to me, it does not. The new number is ASIM848 43R 001853 It does say tint Lam

How do I know, or am I just imagining this??

    1. Hi Merilee,
I assume the tint you are referring to is the tint strip at the top of the windshield because tint applied to the entire windshield is illegal in most cases. The term OEE, which stands for Original Equipment Equivalent, is a bit of a misnomer with debatable meaning. OEM (original equipment manufacturer) and Aftermarket, are the two main product categories. OEM will almost always have a stamp with the car’s make on it either in the bug or elsewhere on the windshield. Aftermarket windshields may have a similar fit and meet safety standards, but not have identical features (like tint strip the same color as the factory windshield).

    1. This code designates the year of manufacturing. In this case it indicates it was manufactured in 2000.

  21. Hello, what is the meaning of OCP No 0003 on the windshield? My OEM windshield has this but the replacement they want to put in doesn’t. Does this affect any of the characteristics of the part?

  22. How do you decode the date of manufacturing for this example?
I have a glass which is “….7” and “8…..”. Could you help me with decoding its date of manufacture?

    Thanks in advance.

    1. Hi Misca,

Typically the dots indicate the month of manufacturing and the number indicates the year. Dots before the year indicate it was manufactured in the first half of the year, and dots after means it was manufactured in the second half. The dots start at 6 and count down to one. For example, 6 dots represents January, 5 for February, 1 for June. Then it start over. 6 dots for July, 5 in August, all the way down to 1 representing December.

  23. Hi all,

I was driving down road today with my 4 month old CRV and noticed a 6 digit (large print) stamp or something right dab smack in the middle of the windshield. Not sure if it was way light was hitting it or what…curious is that’s supposed to be there or if someone did somehting stupid like write with finger on outside of windshield or something…

    1. Hi Mark,

That’s definitely not supposed to be there! My guess is that it may be left over from when the dealer had advertising stickers on the vehicle- perhaps large numbers advertising the price of the CRV, or something similar. Try cleaning the glass very thoroughly with a professional strength glass cleaner and you should be able to get rid of the imprints.

  24. I have a glass and i dont know wich car belongs.
The reference in the glass is:
    (E1) 43R-001204 Staalglas Breda
    Can you help?
    Thanks

    1. Hi Carlos,
Unfortunately, a windshield’s bug is usually only helpful in identifying the make-up of the glass itself, and not what vehicles the glass can be used in. Only if the manufacturer purchases a NAGS license in order to list the NAGS part number is it possible to later on discern exactly what vehicle(s) the glass fits.

  25. I have a car glass with a DOT39 AS2 M35
    43R 000677
    ESG WD 50

Can you tell me what the last 3 lines are referring too. It appears these are tinted from the manufacturer but I am trying to verify.

  26. I have a 2015 Hyundai Azera limited. On the bug it states solar glass. Does this mean that this is a solar windshield and not just a regular tinted windshield. Thanks Gale

    1. Hi Gale,
Solar glass, or infrared reflective (IR) glass, is equipped with technology that allows the transmission of visible light, but blocks solar heat. This helps keep the car’s interior cooler, while not interfering with the driver’s view of the road.

  27. Can you help me pinpoint or narrow down the vehicle to which a rear window had a glass with these inscriptions please?

    SICURSIV CLIMATE 6FM tempered
    DGM 8667 V7 Dot-36 AS2M36
    wwww D272

  28. Hi Daniel,

I had a question if there’s anyway you can tell about the filter specifications from uva/uvb rays, ie wavelengths. As far as I’m aware there is no way of telling from a windshield bug and online searching does not help. Any idea other than contacting the manufacturer?

    1. Thanks for the question, Kevin. There are light meter tools which are designed to measure UVA and UVB transmission. They typically range between $100-$200 and can be ordered online. For information more in depth than this, you will likely need to contact the manufacturer.

  29. I have a piece of flat glass that measures roughly 12″ x 24″ with rounded corners.
    The markings are as follows;
    TAYLOR or TAYLOX
    Tempered
    Safety Glass
    AS2 M-3
    DOT-61
    1-2000
Can anyone tell me identify it?

  30. Found a passenger side window with an ID the read:
    DURO GLASS
    L12.SEKURIT

    U85/AS2
    DOT 20
    1.SAJO-ORUG

Some of these characters may be wrong, very warn down…
Can you please Identify what vehicle it belongs to?
    Thanks!

  31. I have a drivers side window for a truck i assume but i am not sure ifvi am right. Im looking to sale it but i dobt kbow what it is worth. The sticker says GM TEMPERD GS

  32. Hello, I want to know, if the windshield of my car could work with an HUD, which will be probably added:
    GM Laminated SA
    DOT747 AS1 M7450
    // Transp 70% MIN
    FUYAO

Thanks for more informations. Best regards from Germany

  33. Hi there, could you tell me if it’s be possible to know the transparency % from the ‘bug’? I’ve asked everyone (Manufacturer included), checked every blog in the web, etc. and no one seems to know.
    Thanks for your help.

    1. Hi Luciano,
There typically is not an indication of the exact transparency level. However, AS1 and AS2 glass are supposed to have at least 70% light transmittance and AS3 glass should typically have less than 70% light transmittance.

  34. I have a 1968 Oldsmobile 442 convertible that I am restoring. It will need a new windshield. Unfortunately; all glass in the car is PPG. As I understand it, PPG no longer makes automotive glass. Is there any company that would be able to custom etch a bug to match the old one? Is there a different solution? Thank you for this excellent reference tool.

    1. Hi Skip,
You might run into copyright issues if you custom etch a bug. It’s possible you might find a new old stock or used windshield somewhere (check with glass-seekers.com) or you can check with Pilkington Classics to see if they would have a satisfactory product.

  35. I have a back windshield for a convertible Ford. But for what year and make I dont know.

    Ford SUN-X VF-M327
    DOT-287 AS2 8. D

  36. In the Toyota parts catalog, the OEM windshield glass for my 1988 Toyota Land Cruiser (FJ62) includes the following reference: “T=5.3”. This glass is no longer available, but I’ve found an older model replacement glass that is supposed to fit this vehicle. However, this glass shows “T=5.0”. Can you tell me what the specification means?….Thanks, Roger

    1. Hello Roger,
Thank you for your question! This likely indicates that the gap around the edge of the windshield will be different and a slightly large molding will be needed to cover this gap. Good luck with the project!

  37. Need windshield for 1972 Toyota Crown body code MS75. Any ideas where this can be had or are there custom windshield fabricators that can duplicate the original glass?

CAN ANYONE HELP ME FIND IT

  41. Hi Daniel,
I see the following stamp on the windshield and I need to know if the last digits(20) refer to the manufactering date/ year, can you help me out?
I already learned that is is manufactured by Shenzen(DOT563).

    TriVal
    Laminated
    DOT 563 A51 M848
    ** 20
    *****
    kind regards,
    Coen

    1. Hi Coen,
Thanks for the question. The month and year typically are listed at the bottom of the bug, so it’s likely that this information does refer to the manufacturing date. The sum of the number of dots equal numbers. For example: ** = 2, ***** = 5. We believe this windshield was manufactured May of 2020. However, you’ll want to reach out to the manufacturer directly to find out exactly how they code their dates.

  42. Audi front windshield

    wat does this E 000233 & 1* means
how to check date of manufacturing and place of manufacturing

    1. There should be an “E” with a one to two digit number next to it and a circle around it, which indicates the country of manufacturing. The list of country codes is below. The date code is the “1*” which we believe indicates that it was manufactured in 2001.

Thanks for the question. None of the information you provided indicates a manufacturing date as far as I can tell. Are there any other numbers or dots?

  45. I’m leasing a Mercedes Benz. I replaced the windshield at safelite because Geico directed me there. Will that be a problem when I return the car?

    1. Mercedes typically recommends replacing only using OEM parts. You’ll need to check with Mercedes directly to find out. It’s always important to keep in mind that you’re free to use the shop of your choice when having a repair done through insurance. Insurance providers are not allowed to force you to use a certain shop.

  48. 2-1/2 years ago I replaced the front windshield on my 2016 Acura MDX TECH/Advance package. Now Dr assist safety systems are failing. Per Acura, the camera and radar are under my extended warranty. The dealer says $2300 bucks to put an original factory windshield back in and re-calibrate the camera ( claiming because it’s a FUYAO windshield the camera now, after 2.5 years, doesn’t know where the car is on the road. Any advice about this windshield issue, vis a vis safety systems?

    1. Hi Tony,
Thanks for reaching out to us with your question. Each Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) in a particular make has its own nuances, so we can’t speak specifically to your Acura MDX. However, most manufacturers recommend replacing only with OEM glass for models that feature ADAS. This is because the clarity of the glass plays an important role in the proper functioning of the ADAS. Any distortion could throw off the system.
On the other hand, it’s curious that your vehicle’s ADAS functioned properly for so long after the replacement and is just now having issues. Is the area of the windshield near and around the ADAS clean? Are there any new cracks or rock chips (even small ones) on the windshield? These could be factors.
Consult your vehicle’s manual section about ADAS maintenance. There are typically cleaning procedures that must be completed regularly to ensure camera clarity. Other factors such as low tire pressure, unbalanced weight distribution, or an improper alignment can cause malfunctions in some systems. If all of these elements are in good working order, then it’s possible your dealer’s assessment is correct. We always recommend heeding the advice of the manufacturer, especially when it comes to ADAS.

  49. Hi, I recently had to have the rear glass replaced in my VW transporter.
I’ve found the new Fuyao glass is not the same size as the original Sekurit glass.
Is this normal or did the glass repair people fit the wrong glass?

    1. Hi Trevor,
Sizing may differ slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer. However, they should still fit similarly. Unfortunately, the information printed on bug will not help to identify the application.
